Crape myrtle is a beautiful ornamental tree that is suited for summer time planting. All it takes is a sunny spot in your yard. Crape myrtles come in a wide range of sizes and colors and it’s important to match the variety of crape myrtle to the area or use you have in mind. The smallest of these varieties are the miniatures which grow only 2` to 3` feet high. They are suitable to use in containers as well as planting in the ground. The dwarf variety grow from 5` to 8` feet in height and are also suitable for containers and beds. The standard crape myrtles range from 10` to 30` feet at maturity and are best planted in the ground. The new varieties are especially rich and vibrant in color, and most begin blooming earlier in the season than older varieties. All can be grown as bushes or trimmed to be more tree like in form. Plant all crape myrtles in areas that receive sun throughout the day, making sure they have good air circulation all around them. Mulch them heavily with Ladybug Sylvan Mulch, water properly and feed regularly with Landscape Essentials and Color Essentials to keep them healthy and in bloom.
NOTE: We do not recommend topping crape myrtles in the spring, but rather allowing them to take on their lovely shape. However removing spent blooms in the summer will encourage them to bloom more quickly.
